J.D. Vance is very concerned about the declining birth rate in our country. So concerned, in fact, that he is floating various ideas to increase the number of babies produced in the U.S. — i.e., increasing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of wee humans.
Listening to J.D’s “plea to procreate” got me to wondering what he is really talking about. Since he is clearly not interested in supporting education, health care, help for working parents, medicare, medicaid, social security or any other programs that inspire confidence that my baby will not be born into poverty, plagued by disease and ignorance, and unable to get ahead in this country, just what is he really saying?
First of all, let’s look at the numbers. Over the past 70 years (my lifetime), the population of our United States has increased by more than one hundred and seventy-seven MILLION people — or roughly two and one half MILLION people per year. During that same 70 years, the TOTAL NUMBER of live births has remained at roughly four million per year.

Granted, the NUMBER of live births per 1,000 people has decreased from 24 to 12 over the past 70 years. But that is squarely offset by the increase in population. We manufacture four million babies per year, and have done so for 70 years. We are clearly not in danger of extinction — even if we pass Death with Dignity legislation.
So what is J.D. talking about?
This is a purity issue. This is furthering the mistaken belief that there are underlying human differences between races, belief systems, and sexes. That a particular skin color or language or anything to do with sex makes one group of humans better than all others. The delusional idea that there is one “master race” better suited to govern all others, to control the aspirations and choices of all others, to determine where and how all others can live, love, and die.
From 1920 to 1950, the population of America was about 90% “white.” That number is currently around 75% and declining. Hispanic people are the fastest growing group, with both immigration and birth rates higher than white people. By 2050, the largest population group in the U.S. is predicted to be brown people.
This plea to procreate is just another manifestation of a desperate group of insecure people afraid of monsters under their beds. Those monsters are brown people. And what J.D. is really saying is “make more WHITE babies.”
J.D. believes that white babies will support the idea that one race is superior to any other. Whether we outnumber them, or export them, or disenfranchise them, is not as important as making sure brown people don’t take over our country.
You know, like we did from the Native Americans.
